AJC 15/03 - Mind Cafe Outing

Kah Hui organised a 15/03 gathering which was held at Mind Cafe at Prinsep St. Janice, ZhiQi, WenChuan, Tien Soon, Kian Huat (he goes by Kevin in NTU), Kah Hui and I showed up. We are supposed to meet in Plaza Singapore at 6:30pm but I was late due to the horrible traffic jam which stretched from the junction at the Istana to all the way to Paragon. A usual 40 min trip to town turned to a journey that is almost 2 hours. What's worse is that I've got a bunch of ang moh teens annoying the hell out of everyone in the bus by running and jumping around the bus.

Finally reached the Mind Cafe after 2 hours and 15 minutes of travelling. Note to self, take the train to town in the evenings.

I'll let the pictures do the talking:

"Shiver me timbers!" Kah Hui and Wenchuan nailed the right pirate expression while the rest tried their best.

Wenchuan and I trying to sort out the rules to one of the games...

While Tien Soon looks at the (rather ragged) rules.

After a few minutes and consultation with the staff...

WC: "Mien Gott! You're right, Danny! I hold my head in shame!"

Meanwhile, the rest began to camwhore...

Kah Hui's face getting numb after smiling for tons of photos.

Janice and Zhiqi attempts to move as far away from the camera as possible (so that their face will look smaller).

Kian Huat does his best Steven Lim expression!

Tien Soon avoiding the toppling of the Jenga Stack

The rest of us stayed away from the table as far as possible, knowing how clumsy uncoordinated Tien Soon sometimes is.

4D anyone?

Somehow the positioning of Kian Huat's head and Kah Hui's pose makes the picture looks very wrong.

Kian Huat trying to block Kah Hui, guessed it worked.

Everybody just love to kick Kian Huat.

That's all for my coverage of our mini 15/03 outing. Hope that many more could make it for the next. For a more in-depth coverage of the outing go to Kian Huat's blog.

What I've Watched: 投名状

Met up with some of my OG mates for a movie session. We watched the movie at Tiong Bahru Plaza because some of them work near the mall. I wonder how they managed to get a job since the holidays are only about a month long.

投名状 is set in the late Qing Dynasty during the 太平 Rebellion, tells about three sworn brothers (played by Andy Lau, Jet Li and Takeshi Kaneshiro) who turn against one another over a beautiful woman (Xu Jinglei). It is a war film in the earlier two-thirds and goes deep into each character for the final third.

There was a trailer for a Thai horror film before the movie and Victor gave Wan Yan a nudge during the scariest part of the trailer. The result - Victor giggled, Wan Yan almost screamed and those in front of us stared at us. Nice one, Victor (haha)!

Random thoughts about the film:

- there's too many close up shots of Takeshi Kaneshiro. I guess its to cater to the female viewers.

- if you're one of the main actors, your face will only be 'just' dirty, while the extras looks like they have never washed their faces in their lifetime.

- I wonder how much they paid for the extras 'acting' as dead bodies, the body count is almost as close to the film '300' (Edit: I guess there's some video editing done).

- Jet Li must be some kind of superhuman, he continued to kill close to a dozen of enemy soldiers after having a spear through his shoulder.

- Takeshi Kaneshiro sure looks like he's in the wrong era during the final third of the film as he's dressed in winter clothing that looks like something wore in Russia.

- only Takeshi Kaneshiro thinks that shaving is important as he's the one that appeared clean shaven almost throughout the entire movie.

This is for you if you like war films (and Takeshi Kaneshiro). The final third of the film is paced too slowly and almost put me to sleep.

3/5 - Its not my type of movie.

What Video I've Watched: NORTON FIGHTER~!

Found this show that is sponsored by Norton Anti-Virus. Very Power Ranger-ish with lousy computer puns. The maid is cute too!

Norton Fighter: Part 1

Norton Fighter: Part 2

Now that's what I call good marketing for the product!

Galer Outing

Its good to meet up with OG mates from the CAC FOC. We had an overnight KBox session at Cineleisure. I arrived at around 6:40pm and was supposed to meet them at 7pm but I decided to walk around the Hereens to do some people watching seek shelter from the rain.

Seeing all the teens walking around the mall sure makes me feel old and I'm only 21 this year! I wonder how will I feel once I turn 22 (two days after Valentine's Day *hint* *hint*)? Check out this really funny strip I came across while surfing the net:

I guess this kind of morbid humour appeals to me. Click the link to the strip's website. Its one of the funniest webcomic that I had came across in a long time.

Sorry to digress, we sorta had a karaoke marathon from 7pm to 2:30am. Some of the things that I observed:

- One can transform with a mic in hand. Carmen (I seriously think that I got the name wrong) turned from a quiet girl to a 张惠妹-ish diva. The ability to nail every tune that she sang definitely made her the highlight of the night.

- Victor can rap 潘玮柏 songs pretty well, he got practise one hor, dun pray pray.

- When Curtiz arrived, many left. I guess that he's unpopular they are trying to catch the last train home.

- Kbox is evil. Free flow of sore-throat-causing tidbits but the drinks isn't. Guess that's how I get a tingling sensation in my throat one day later.

- Joyce hates people taking candid shots of her. She have to personally screen out the photos that makes her look ugly and fat has bad lighting.

- Gentlemen are either poor or have deep pockets.

Sorry no photos, I'm too lazy to upload them (:

I really hope that we can have another outing soon. Victor wants to watch Warlords but hardly anyone answered him during the mass convo on MSN. Its a bit disappointing. Guess that everyone has their own matters to attend to and isn't as free as me!

Where's the Sun?

The Monsoon season is back and the skies are covered with dark clouds for the past few days.

I had woke up early this morning, its quite warm and thought to myself that finally the weather had cleared up, only to see the heavens pour buckets now.

I guess our monsoon season is almost similar to winter in temperate countries, replace the snow with tons of rain instead. People are also dressing up for season too, jackets and scarves seems to be the choice clothing accessory while walking around in the malls.

I'm currently trapped in the (guess what) Spinelli branch in Novena Square, sipping a nice hot cup of latte, after having lunch with my ex-colleague. I guess this is how it feels like during winter.

I miss the sun.

What I've Watched: 30 Days of Night

Not for the chicken hearted, 30 Days of Night is a 'bloody good' film that is filled with blood and gore. In short the movie is about a bunch of vampires invading an Alaskan town that is swallowed in night for 30 days.

The initial part of the movie is pretty boring as it attempts to show how various means of communication and transportation was sabotaged. The introduction to the characters isn't well executed; I don't feel anything when the characters are killed or eaten by the vampires.

The real meat of the story starts when the vampires starts attacking the town. Like typical vampires, they have supernatural agility and strength and turns into dust when exposed to sunlight, a nice departure from the usual slow and brainless zombies that is overused in horror movies.

Expect the usual 'boo' tactics to scare the audience, but some of the scenes are rather scary. The vampire girl in the convenience store is downright creepy if only she didn't utter that line.

Random thoughts on the film:

- How many times did they drop the f-bomb in the initial 30 minutes of the movie? Do Alaskans have a lack of adjectives to describe things?

- The vampires here don't suck blood, they sorta rub their face in the neck of their victims.

- You will notice that the face of the vampire's leader is less bloody than the rest of the vampires. I guess being the leader means that he has to be more civilised and wipe up after consuming.

- Why didn't the survivors try to use garlic to ward off the vampires? Don't tell me Alaskans don't eat/use garlic in their cooking.

If you like horror flicks that's in your face scary, with tons of blood and gore, this movie is for you. Avoid it if you like action in your horror movie as they are almost non-existent.

3/5 - watch it only during the weekdays

Note to self: caffeine makes you awake dumb dumb!

Gift Ideas?

No idea as to what to give to that special one of yours? Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg came up with something that will definitely 'surprise' them!

Follow these easy steps for the 'gift that keeps giving':

1: Cut a hole in a box
2: Put your junk in that box
3: Make her open the box

Winning an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, many sure agree that the gift idea is good!

Happy holidays (and do look out for strategically placed gifts)!

SIAN!

You know you're bored when...

1) you start to do housework by your own initiative.

2) you think that hanging around in a cafe to play your PSP is entertaining.

3) looking at notes for future modules sounds like a good idea.

4) you entertain yourself by clicking random links on Wikipedia.

5) you start to watch reruns.

6) you start to do up such a list.

At least it beats going to school attending boring lectures/tutorials. I guess its me, I can't really stay put in one place for a really long time as I get bored easily. Just like a small kid, I am always like to play the newer toys and constantly looking for new things to experience and do.

Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 07

I had experienced first hand of a marathon on Sunday morning. Volunteered with a bunch of FOC people to raise some funds and we had to report at the Padang at an unearthly 1am.

Initially the plan was for the entire bunch of people to man the drinks station but due to shortage of manpower in other places, some of us got route marshalling instead.

Everyone got paired up with someone while I had to man the route alone. At least I got to feel the cool breeze and see the sunrise in the morning, which feels really good as I'm usually wake up late.

You got to give kudos to those who do this on a competitive level. Most of them are able to complete the entire 42+km in 2 hours 15 mins. To put that in perspective, imagining running 1km in 3.2 mins, surely not an easy task!

Anyway the number of people who needs some deep heat rub cream(for muscle cramps and tightening) is overwhelming. Everyone will crowd around you just to get some of the cream. A tube only lasted for 10 mins!

The whole thing ended at around 12pm when the last two runners (or rather walkers) made it to the half way point and was persuaded by the organisers to board a minivan instead of finishing the whole marathon. A pity that they can't complete the marathon but you got to be realistic. If after 6 hours you only managed to complete half of the marathon, you will definitely not able to finish the marathon before 2pm.

I have to give credit to those who I know that managed to finish the run, no matter how they do it. Its an accomplishment where only those with the proper physical and mental conditioning can finish it.
